Sight Words

Developing a sight word vocabulary is one of the most important skills young readers can develop.  Sight words are common words that make up 60-80% of the text that is in a book.  We have 220 sight words in our language.  Sight words are usually words that can not be "sounded out".  Your child should be able to identify a sight word within three seconds of seeing it.  Your child will need to learn the following words in Kindergarten this year.  They will be tested on sight word recognition throughout the year (see Testing Page).  Practice reading them as often as possible.  Ask your child's teacher about activities that you could do to promote your child's sight word vocabulary.  Remember that children who know sight words become more confident readers.  If these words make up 60-80% of the text that is in a book, they already have 60-80% success!

Happy Reading from the Kindergarten teachers!
