Accelerated Reader

We are extremely proud of our Accelerated Reader Program at BPS. Accelerated Reader is a scientifically based program which improves reading ability, increases language and vocabulary, and improves comprehension skills.  The Accelerated Reader Program consists of your child reading a selected AR library book. The reading level  is determined by the teacher and the STAR test. After the child has read his/her book at least three times at home, the next morning, he/she will take a computerized test about the content of the book.  The students earn points toward prizes.   Each teacher in Second Grade sets individual goals for their students.  Here are some tips to help your child at home to achieve their goals.  At the end of the year, we have a GREAT celebration that includes prizes, trophies, and special recognition of our point earners! So Read, Read, Read!!!!!

  • Before you read the book, ask these questions:

What do you think the story is about?
Who are the author and illustrator?

  • As you read the story, ask these questions:

Allow time for the child to look at the pictures as they
          read.
Who are the characters in the story?
What has happened so far in the story?
What do you think will happen next?
Choose a word and ask:  What does this word mean?

After the story, ask these questions:
          What was this story about?
Have the child retell their favorite part of the story.
